"With the Chargers up 20-7 in the third quarter of their season opener, the lights went out at McClintock High.
After a 25-minute delay, one could almost say the same thing about MHS.
The Chargers lost their season opener 35-31 to Peoria Sunrise Mountain, a game in which critical turnovers and numerous penalties put McClintock in compromising positions throughout.
But the drop-off in intensity and execution post-power outage was clear under the stadium lights.
“I don’t know if we thought we could relax, but I keep telling the kids it’s a four-quarter game,” McClintock coach Mike Gibbons said. “It’s unacceptable.”
The Chargers fell into an early first-quarter hole after Mustangs running back Andrew Yanes burst through a gaping hole in the middle for 70 yards. While McClintock had difficulties stopping runs in-between the tackles all night, allowing nearly 300 rushing yards, they dominated much of the first half.
A 20-0 run was sparked by Chargers running back Tavon Watson, who had well over 100 yards in the contest, and quarterback Chris Freudenberg who threw for 184.
The Chargers drove 80 yards in the second quarter to tie the score when Watson scored from a yard out. Two other drives stalled inside the 10. The most glaring of McClintock’s miscues in the red zone occurred in the final seconds of the second quarter when the Chargers lost a down with the clock already stopped by grounding the ball on second and goal.
The Mustangs capitalized on McClintock’s inability to convert opportunities almost immediately after the game re-started roughly two minutes into the third quarter, taking their first drive 79 yards for the score.
Four plays later, the Mustangs’ John Drago intercepted a Freudenberg pass and took it into the end zone from 32 yards out.
The Chargers answered, however, when Freudenberg found receiver Joseph Wells for a 61-yard strike.
McClintock muffed a punt at the 14 which set up the Mustangs’ fourth score.
The Chargers scored a go-ahead field goal after another drive stalled inside the 10, in part due to an illegal substitution penalty.
The Mustangs scored the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter after going 81 yards in just over three minutes.
Freudenberg’s final attempt was intercepted with just under two minutes to play.
“All credit goes to (Sunrise Mountain),” Gibbons said."
